A Mirror to Nature: Realism and Reflection in the Works of David Hare

The study aimed to elucidate the role of realism and reflection in the works of David Hare, a celebrated playwright, exploring the extent to which his writings provide an authentic representation of contemporary societal issues and the human condition. The objectives are to analyze the narrative and dialogic elements in Hare's plays that contribute to realism and to understand how Hare's works act as a reflective medium for audiences, enabling introspection and societal critique. A qualitative analysis was employed, involving a close reading of selected works of Hare. Supplementary interviews were conducted with theatre critics, contemporaries, and scholars to gain a deeper understanding of his unique style and impact on modern theatre. Findings indicated that Hare's plays possess strong elements of realism, primarily in character development, narrative structure, and dialogues. They resonate with audiences because they authentically depict societal challenges, offering both a mirror to the world and a lens through which viewers can introspect. The research also highlighted how Hare's realism differed from, and yet was influenced by, other contemporaneous theatrical movements.
